Best Time to Visit the Okavango Delta

The honest answer: June–August, during Botswana’s dry season. That’s when the flood is fullest because rain that fell in the Angolan highlands in January takes ~1,200 km and five months to reach the Delta. It’s a paradox: the Delta swells when Botswana itself is bone dry and cool. October is the hottest and worst month (35–40°C). January–February are the wettest.

June to August: the flood paradox

This is the real story. The Okavango River flows out of Angola’s highlands. Rain falls around January when it’s wet there. The water travels south roughly 1,200 km over five months through a flat, thirsty landscape, so by the time it reaches Maun in June, Botswana is in the middle of its dry season. The Delta blooms when the country around it is parched. Wildlife concentrates on the water. Mokoro channels run deep. That’s why UNESCO listed it and why safari guides call June through August the best time. It’s also when the fewest tourists come, and when prices are highest.

May and September: shoulder seasons

May is autumn turning to winter. The flood is receding slightly, water is still deep, and crowds are building but not peak yet. September is spring: the flood is still strong, the air is warming, and the road closures have mostly cleared. Both work if you want to avoid the June–August crush but keep the full Delta experience.

November to March: green season

Hot, humid, afternoon storms almost daily. It rains heavily (this is peak season for the Delta’s annual rainfall). The Delta drains as it dries, so mokoro channels shallow. The land turns green, birds explode in number, and it is the best birding season. On the Makgadikgadi pans, the zebra migration happens November–March (green season). Prices drop sharply. If you care about birds or don’t mind water conditions, this season is underrated. You will see fewer tourists and pay less.

April: the forgotten month

Autumn, cooling down, the flood still strong but starting to recede. Cheaper than winter, more pleasant than summer heat. Good compromise if you’re flexible.

October: avoid this month

October is the hottest month of the year. Temperatures regularly hit 35–40°C. The flood is draining; water is lower. Tourist numbers are thin (for good reason). If your only option is October, take it — the Delta is still worth it — but plan for heat.
